1948年、広島県広島市に生まれる。

3歳よりバレエを始め、葉室潔、洲和みち子、橘秋子、シュベッツオフに師事。1971年、松山バレエ団のメンバーとなり、松山樹子に師事する。芸術選奨文部大臣新人賞受賞。松山バレエ団員として第四回、第五回訪中公演に参加。1974年、ヴァルナ国際バレエコンクールに清水哲太郎とともに出場し、金賞を受賞。１年間の文化庁在外研修員としてモナコに留学、マリカ・ベゾブラゾヴァ女史に師事する。1976年、「白鳥の湖」で文化庁芸術祭大賞を受賞。以後、日本はもとよりアメリカ、イギリス、フランス、スペイン、イタリア、ドイツ、オーストリア、スイス、南アフリカ、オーストラリア、ブラジル、メキシコ、マニラ、中国など世界各国に活躍の場を広げる。1976年の初共演をきっかけに、1977年にはロンドンにてエリザベス女王戴冠25周年記念公演でルドルフ・ヌレエフと踊る。同年、文化庁芸術祭大賞を「ジゼル」で清水哲太郎と共に受賞。芸術選奨文部大臣賞受賞。1982年、日本人として初めてパリ・オペラ座に出演する。同年毎日芸術賞受賞。1983年には松山バレエ団創立35周年を記念し、“ヌレエフと松山バレエ団”にて「白鳥の湖」「ジゼル」全幕をヌレエフと踊る。1984年、都民栄誉賞受賞。同年NYメトロポリタンオペラハウス100周年記念ガラパフォーマンスにゲスト出演。このほかパリ・オペラ座、ヴィエナ・オペラハウス、ニューヨーク・メトロポリタン歌劇場、シティセンター、ワシントン・ケネディセンター、ロンドンコロシアム劇場、ローザンヌ・ボーリュ劇場、シドニー・オペラハウス、北京天橋劇場、上海大劇院などでプリマとして出演。1985年、第41回日本芸術院賞、昭和60年度東京新聞舞踊芸術賞、婦人関係功労者内閣総理大臣表彰受賞、英国ローレンスオリビエ賞受賞。1987年よりローザンヌ・バレエ・コンクール、ニューヨーク・バレエ・コンクールなどの国際コンクールでも審査員を務める。1990年朝日賞受賞。1994年外務大臣賞受賞。1997年には女性最年少の文化功労者として顕彰される。2001年舞踊歴50年を迎え、松山バレエ団団長に就任。松山バレエ団のプリマ・バレリーナとして国内外問わずバレエ団のほとんどの公演に主演する一方、バレエ団のあらゆる創造活動の要として活躍。古典バレエだけでなく50年を記念して作られた「アレテー」「On the dancing planet」など新作にも積極的に取り組んでいる。また、2005年には南青山の松山バレエ団「Mouseion」で新たな公演形態を清水哲太郎と共に創り、世界の芸術界の革新運動を推し進めている。

2002年、日本芸術院会員に就任。2006年舞踊歴55年を迎えた。同年17回目のベストオブザイヤーの舞踊批評家協会賞を受賞。著書に「バレリーナの羽ばたき」（ゆまにて出版）「バレリーナの情熱」（大和書房）「バレリーナの情熱」（角川出版）

Yoko Morishita

Director, Matsuyama Ballet, Prima Ballerina

Yoko was born in Hiroshima City in 1948. She first took ballet lessons at the age of three and subsequently studied under Kiyoshi Hamuro, Michiko Suwa, Akiko Tachibana and xx Shuwetzhoff. She joined the Matsuyama Ballet in 1971 as a pupil of Mikiko Matsuyama. She received the Minister of Education Award in the Arts for Outstanding Young Dancers. As a member of the Matsuyama Ballet she participated in the company’s fourth and fifth tours in China. In 1974, performing with Tetsutaro Shimizu, she won the Gold Prize in the International Ballet Competition Varna. For one year she studied in Monaco under Marika Bezobrazova on a scholarship sponsored by the Cultural Agency, and in 1976 received the agency’s Arts Festival Grand Prize for her performance in Swan Lake. Since then she has been performing on the world stage, in the United States of America, Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, South Africa and China. She danced with Rudolf Nureyev for the first time in 1976, and again for the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth in London. In 1978, Yoko received with Tetsutaro Shimizu the Grand Prize from the Agency of Culture for her performance in Giselle. In 1982, she was the first Japanese ever to perform at the Paris Opera. The same year she received the Mainichi Shinbun Arts Award. In 1983, she starred with Rudolf Nureyev in full performances of Swan Lake and Giselle on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Matsuyama Ballet. In 1984, she received the Tokyo Citizens’ Honor Award. The same year she was the guest performer at the gala performance commemorating the centenary of the New York Metropolitan Opera. She has also performed as prima ballerina at the Paris Opera, the Vienna Opera, the New York City Center, the Kennedy Center in Washington, the London Coliseum, Theâtre de Beaulieu in Lausanne, the Sydney Opera, the Beijing Tenshou Theatre, the Shanghai Grand Theatre and with the Twentieth Century Ballet. In 1985, she received the 41st Japan Academy of Arts Award; and in 1975, the Tokyo Newspapers’ Arts and Dancing Award, the Prime Minister’s Award for Distinguished Service by Women, and the British Laurence Olivier Award. Since 1987, Yoko Morishita has been invited to be a judge at international competitions including the Lausanne Ballet Concours and the New York Ballet competition. In 1990, she received the Asahi Shimbun Award, and in 1994, the Foreign Minister’s Award. In 1997, she was awarded the Distinguished Cultural Service Award, the youngest woman to have been so honored. In 2001, she was appointed the director of the Matsuyama Ballet to mark her half century in ballet. As the Group’s leading dancer she performs in most of the repertoire while at the same time taking an active part in the creation of all its original productions, including “Arettez” and “On the Dancing Planet” created to mark the group’s fiftieth anniversary. In 2005, she created with Tetsutaro Shimizu a new kind of production at the Mouseion in Minami Aoyama, to promote innovation in art around the world.

In 2002, she became a member of the Japan Art Academy. In 2006, she received the 17th Best-of-the-Year Dancing Critics’ Association Award. She has written a number of books, including “A Ballerina Flaps her Wings” (Yumanite Publications), “Passion of a Ballerina” (Daiwashobo), and “The Passion of a Ballerina” (KADOKAWA SHOTEN PUBLISHING CO.,LTD.).
